Muharram 1444/2022 – Part 3

It is a certainty that in contrast to other months, Allah ﷻ has elevated the status of righteous deeds during the holiest months of the year (Muharram, Rajab, Ramadan, Dhul Qa’dah and Dhul Hijjah), thereby allowing us to be the recipients of countless rewards and benefits! Likewise, oppression and disobedience committed during these months is more grave and serious.

One of the worst forms of disobedience and oppression particularly prevalent during the month of Muharram is the maligning of the prophet’s companions and the fabrication of lies against them. How can people even comprehend cursing them when Allah ﷻ has said concerning them:

And the foremost pioneers of the Muhajirin (those who migrated from Makkah to Madinah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Madinah who helped the Muhajirin) and also those who followed them exactly in virtue; Allah is well-pleased with them and they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.[Surah At Tawbah].

Concerning the Sahabah, the great Taabi’ee scholar Hassan al Basri (d. 110 A.H) said:

قتال شهده أصحاب محمد ﷺ و غبنا ، و علموا و جهلنا ، و اجتـمعوا فاتبعنا ، و اختلفوا فوقـفنا

These were battles that the Sahabah engaged in and we were not present. They were fully aware of all the circumstances relating to them and we are ignorant of that. We follow the Sahabah in whichever matter they were unanimous. We adopt silence concerning any matters about which they disputed.

Inspired Annual Retreat 2022

Our 3-day educational and recreational retreat to Lake District, attended by participants of varying ages and nationalities from across the UK.

The retreat (رِحْلةٌ) consisted of hiking, kayaking and engaging spiritual reminders, enabling brothers to get to know one another and develop their interpersonal and team working skills.

We hope you all thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from the event and we ask Allah SWT to enable us to consistently serve the needs of our communities.

O you who have believed, fear Allāh. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow – and fear Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Aware of what you do.

Muharram 1444/2022-Part 2

Abu Bakrah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“The year is twelve months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumadah and Sha’ban.” [Al-Bukhari]

⚫️ Muharram is so called because it is a sacred (muharram) month and to confirm its sanctity, Allah ﷻ says in Surah At-Tawbah

“so wrong not yourselves therein”

which means do not wrong yourselves in these sacred months, because *sin in these months is worse* than in other months. It was reported that Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) said that this phrase referred to all the months, then these four were singled out and made sacred, so that sin in these months is more serious and good deeds bring a greater reward.

🔴 Common sins in Muharram and Aashuraa included a small minority who used to celebrate and rejoice on the 10th day due to their enmity towards Al-Husayn (RA). Equally sinful are those who continue to treat it as a month of mourning and cursing of those who came before them while openly displaying the rituals of jahiliyyah such as wailing, slapping their cheeks and rending their garments. They are not observing the day or the month the way it ought to be observed. Their actions serve no purpose other than the renewal of their grief (over not maintaining their allegiance to Al-Husayn RA) and sectarian feelings, and the stirring up of hatred and hostility among muslims. May Allah ﷻ grant all our communities correct understanding and righteous actions. Allahumma Aameen.

Day of Aashura’ 1444/2022-Part 1

When and why?
Aashurā’ (the 10th of Muharram) will fall on Monday 08/08/2022. It is the day in which Allah ﷻ saved Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh hence the Prophet ﷺ fasted on it and commanded the Muslims to also fast. Before Ramadan was made Fardh, this was the first obligatory fast the Muslims observed.

Virtue
When asked about fasting on the day of Aashurā’, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“يُكَفِّرُ اَلسَّنَةَ اَلْمَاضِيَةَ” — (رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ)

“It is an expiation (for the sins committed in) the previous year” (Muslim).

Misconceptions 🚩
Correcting misconceptions
We must remember that the sanctity of Aashurā was established during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, long before the tragic martyrdom of his beloved grandson.

We can learn ample lessons from the tragic killing of Husayn RA and other members of the prophet’s beloved family , but we must not lose sight of the real significance of this day and observe it in a way which is pleasing to Allah ﷻ and His Messenger ﷺ.

Branches of faith: Humility (Final Part)

How to achieve humility?

[1] SPREAD THE SALAM
Extending our greeting ‘Assalamu Alaikum’ to the old, young, rich, poor, strangers and relatives, will open our hearts to humility.

A man asked Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), “Which act in Islam is the best?*” He replied, *”To feed (the poor & needy) and to greet those whom you know and those you do not know” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

[2] DISLIKING THAT PEOPLE STAND UP FOR YOU
“Let those who like for people to stand up for them take their seats in the Fire.”

[3] NOT ASCRIBING PURITY TO ONESELF
Allah swt says,
{So ascribe not purity to yourselves. He knows best him who fears Allah and keep his duty to Him [An-Najm 53:32]

[4] SERVING THE FAMILY
The prophet (ﷺ) “used to keep himself busy serving his family members and when it was time for the prayer, he would go out to offer prayer” [Bukhari]

Branches of Faith: Humility (3)

BRANCHES OF FAITH: HUMILITY (Part 3)

Arrogance & pride (Kibr) is the opposite of humility & modesty. It is a spiritual illness that makes the afflicted one consider himself superior to others due to his knowledge, social or economic status, appearance or any other blessing bestowed upon him by his Creator.

When describing this dispraised trait, our Prophet (ﷺ) said:

الْكِبْرُ بَطَرُ الْحَقِّ، وَغَمْطُ النَّاسِ

Arrogance means ridiculing and rejecting the Truth and belittling people.”

WHY IS IT SO DISLIKED?
Pride prevents one from acquiring the qualities of the believers, thus he cannot like for the believers that which he likes for himself, nor can he be humble, or avoid envy, or restrain his anger, or even accept good advice.

Branches of Faith: Humility (2)

BRANCHES OF FAITH: HUMILITY (Part 2)

Humility before Allah implies having faith in Him and submitting to all His commandments and prohibitions. Prostrating and placing the forehead (essence of our ego) on the ground during prayer, is an acknowledgment of our lowliness and humility before the Lord of the Worlds.

One of the scholars said that humility before people is that you consider those older than you as superior to you and say ”they have preceeded me to Islam and righteous actions”. Likewise you belittle yourself before the young and say ”I have indeed preceded them to many sins and evil actions”.

Our Prophet ﷺ said:

‎{ مَا نَقَصَتْ صَدَقَةٌ مِنْ مَالٍ، وَمَا زَادَ اَللَّهُ عَبْدًا بِعَفْوٍ إِلَّا عِزًّا، وَمَا تَوَاضَعَ أَحَدٌ لِلَّهِ إِلَّا رَفَعَهُ }

“Charity does not decrease wealth, and Allah increases the honor of him who forgives, and no one humbles himself for Allah’s sake except that Allah raises him in status/dignity” [Muslim].

Branches of Faith: Humility (1)

BRANCHES OF FAITH: HUMILITY (Part 1)

In Arabic, the word التَّوَاضُع (Humility) is derived from الضَّعَة which literally means to be submissive and insignificant. In practice, it means that a believer should display his weakness & inability in relation to the greatness and power of Allah.

In English, the word “humility” comes from the Latin root word which means “ground.” Thus, being humble means to you lower yourself to the ground, not elevate yourself above others. Humility is to not see yourself as superior to others due to social status, education, ethnicity, or colour.

There are two types of humility in Islam: humility before our Creator, and humility towards His creation.
This humility comes from knowing Allah and recognising his greatness, while knowing oneself, faults and weaknesses.

The prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Allah has revealed to me that you should humble yourselves to one another so that no person will boast over another nor commit injustice against another” [Muslim].

6-Belief in Predestination

PILLAR OF IMAN (6): BELIEF IN PREDESTINATION

The word ‘Qadr’ linguistically means a specified measure or amount of something whether it is in terms of quality and quantity. So here Al-Qadr is an Arabic word meaning Allah’s predestination of measurements and sustenance of everything and everyone, according to His knowledge and wisdom. Belief in al-Qadr comprises of four aspects or levels:

1) Belief in Allah’s knowledge of everything from the beginning of time until the end.

2) Belief in Allah’s recording of everything in the Preserved Tablet (اللوح المحفوظ)

3) Belief that whatever happens only happens by the will of Allah and if He does not will something, it can never come into existence.

4) Belief in Allah’s creating of all, bringing of everything into existence and making everything be.

FIRST ASPECT: KNOWLEDGE

Belief in al-Qadr entails to believe that Allah’s knowledge is all encompassing. It is to believe that Allah knows all things: be it general or specific, be it knowledge of the past, present or future or be it even knowledge of the hypothetical (something that didn’t happen, had it happened, how it would’ve happened).

He knows everything their hearts conceal and everything they reveal: there is nothing hidden in the heavens or on earth that is not in a clear Record. (Surah An-Naml, verse 74-75)

Allah’s knowledge also varies from the knowledge of His creation in that it’s not preceded by ignorance nor is it followed by forgetfulness.

Moses said, ‘My Lord alone has knowledge of them, all in a record; my Lord does not err or forget. (Surah Taha, verse 52)

SECOND ASPECT: WRITING

The second concept is that Allah, the Most High, has written all matters that would ever occur in a Preserved Tablet (للوح المحفوظ).

In the Preserved Tablet everything is determined and accounted for and is not subject to change. Scholars agree that the other types of records such as the Life-time Record (Written while the foetus is in the mother’s womb), the Annual Record (which is written on Laylatul Qadr) and the Daily Record, may be affected by certain acts such aa Duā and Righteousness.

“Nothing increases one’s life-span except good deeds, and nothing repels Divine Decree except du’a. And very, a person may be deprived for sustenance due to a sin that he does!” [Narrated by Ibn Majah]

Note: Changes in destiny caused by dua and righteousness have already been accounted for in The Preserved Tablet.  This does not interfere with one’s free choice/will but rather is a testament to the all-encompassing nature of Allah’s nature.

Allah S.W.T will NOT use this (the preserved Tablet) against us on the Day of Judgment but ANOTHER writing, the account of our deeds, which will exactly match the Preserved Tablet as it had taken into account of everything!

They will find whatever they did present before them, and your Lord will not wrong anyone. (Surah al-Kahf, verse 49)

THIRD ASPECT: ALLAH’S WILL

If anything were to happen against the Will of Allah, it would imply weakness. Glorified be Allah from attributing such a thing to him! Belief in His Will means that nothing can occur without His permission. Allah says in Surah Al Qasas:

وَرَبُّكَ يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَاءُ وَيَخْتَارُ ۗ

And your Lord creates whatsoever He wills and chooses.

We also have a will granted to us by Allah S.W.T which we use to indulge in or avoid actions of our choice and hence we will be held accountable for that which we used to do. These actions which we will be accountable for are those which we did willingly, and not unwillingly. Our will is a product of Allah’s will and is secondary to His will.

FOURTH ASPECT: CREATION

The 4th aspect of Qadr is to believe that Allah created all of creation, all attributes they possess and even their actions. He creates the actions by making their existence possible but the human being earns them.

Aside: Actions have 4 components: Will, Strength, Time, and Place, All of which were created by Allah. We use these 4 components when performing an action.
