The Month of Spirituality
A focus in Ramadan should be to increase our spirituality, meaning our iman, our taqwa, and cleanliness of the heart and. This can be done through doing good deeds solely for the sake of Allah and removing ourselves from situations that would bring us further away from Allah. If we are able to refrain from food all day long, inshallah we can also focus on ridding our soul of any blotches of fasad. This is a noble goal, as the Allah (SWT) said: “Truly, he has succeeded, who purifies his soul.” (Quran, 91:9)
Ramadan-2023 (Day 7)
Rid yourself of Bad Habits
Unfortunately, many habits and customs can distract us from ibadah (worship) and building a better relationship with Allah. While this doesn’t mean we should leave all our customs, such as cooking certain foods, we cannot allow Ramadan to be a month of relaxation and leave the primary focus of the month – worshipping Allah. We should assess how much time we are dedicating to ibadah – Ramadan will go quickly, you do not want to regret wasting your time!
Ramadan-2023 (Day 6)
Connect with the Quran
Ramadan is the month of the Quran. Scholars and ulama of the past and present would leave their focus on subjects such as hadith, seerah and others and focus solely on the Quran in this month. You should take advantage of this time to vitalise your connection with the Quran. A practical tip is to divide each juz into 5 parts, and read a part of the juz after each salah. This way, you can easily finish the Quran before Ramadan finishes.
Ramadan-2023(Day 5)
What Really Matters to You?
Every Muslim’s priority in life should be seeking the pleasure of Allah. Seeking the pleasure of Allah can lead to true happiness and contentment in life. Ramadan is the best time of year to focus on this goal of ensuring your actions and objectives in life are focused on pleasing Allah. Through fasting and focusing on good habits, you can bring yourself closer to the state of mind that the Prophet (saw) had, which is shown when he said “oh Allah, as long as you are not angry with me, I do not care (about calamities).”
Ramadan-2023 (Day 4)
Come back to Allah
All of mankind sins, and Ramadan is the month of tawbah (repentance). Allah loves when His servants make sincere tawbah, which can be accomplished by truly repenting from this act and intending to never do it again. Use this month to scan your heart for any ills and diseases, repent from them, and strengthen your relationship with Allah.
Ramadan-2023 (Day 3)
The Change Starts Here
Ramadan is the best time of year to improve yourself. Identify areas you want to improve, such as salah, and habits you want to give up, such as swearing. Take advantage of this time of fasting to improve these areas. Indeed, the Prophet (saw) said, “Fasting is a shield.” Use your shield in order to improve yourself!
Ramadan-2023 (Day 2)
Have a Plan
From the beginning, you must have a plan on how you want to bring the most benefit out of Ramadan. Set some goals you want to achieve, which can be split into communal and individual. Individuals could be completing the Quran, communal could be volunteering at the masjid. Make this plan and stick to it in order to get the most reward!
Ramadan-2023 (Day 1)
Renew our Intention
We must examine our intentions as we enter Ramadan and remember the ultimate purpose of fasting is to gain the pleasure of Allah (SWT). As a Muslim, we must use this month to remember we have willingly submitted ourselves to Allah and therefore, the prime reason we fast is because Allah commands us to.
From this base, we must benefit from this month from controlling our nafs and focusing on bettering our relationship with Allah. Every night, renew your intentions, and Insha’Allah you can succeed.
Branches of Iman: Fulfilling Trusts (Last Part)
BETRAYAL: ATONEMENT & CONSEQUENCE
▪️The atonement (kaffârah) for not fulfilling a particular oath or promise is feeding 10 needy people, clothing them or fasting 3 days. (Refer to 5:89 for full Aayah and note that only trusts with lawful conditions are obligatory to fulfil.)
▪️Regarding those that die without fulfilling their trusts, our prophet (ﷺ) said: “Every traitor (of trusts) will have a flag on the Day of Judgement to identify them according to the amount of their treachery; there is no traitor of greater treachery than the leader who betrays his own people” (Muslim/ Bukhari).
Branches of Iman: Fulfilling Trusts (Part 5)
Allah (ﷻ) says in the Qur’an (5:1), “O you who have faith, honour (all) your pledges/contracts*…” Since Islam doesn’t distinguish between religion and state, the above verse relates to *all aspects* of our lives (individual, social and political). It does not only apply to money but to *all* trusts such as repaying debts or appointing someone for a job, position or responsibility. Regarding this, Allah (ﷻ) says:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تُؤَدُّوا الْأَمَانَاتِ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهَا وَإِذَا حَكَمْتُم بَيْنَ النَّاسِ أَن تَحْكُمُوا بِالْعَدْلِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ نِعِمَّا يَعِظُكُم بِهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا
Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due (and most deserving of it) and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing.
